Today, I continued my work on our forthcoming Women's History Month display. Now that we had finalized our featured books, I began putting together bios regarding our featured women of color jurists. Effectively, beside each featured book, there would be a photo a bio of the woman featured in that book. This would be especially useful to students, given so many of our books were biographies. While some featured women were extremely well known (like, for example, Kamala Harris), others were less well known (like Pauli Murray). This ultimately was a pretty big task. Researching and writing bios for over fifteen different jurists, each with incredible impact and accomplishment in the law, was no easy feat.
That said, the work was incredibly rewarding and fascinating. I learned quite a lot during my research and think the display will be a powerful showcase of the incredible women of color in the law. One of the greatest challenges of writing these bios was determining what content to include. Many of the featured jurists had long, storied lives of incredibly legal activism. To condense their impact into a single paragraph was daunting. I did not want the blurbs to be too long, as I wanted students to be able to catch the gist of the featured woman's work at a relatively quick glance. Ultimately, however, I am pleased with the bios and look forward to seeing the finished display next week.
Photo Description: The final, organized stacks of books and covers for the display. Since Lisa Goodman was going to assemble the display without me over weekend, I wanted to streamline her work and organize everything I had put together.
