As per usual, I manned the reference desk again today. For the first time in a while, a student came by looking for a resource, as well as general guidance on the best resource for their task. Namely, they were studying for the bar exam and were hoping to find print copies of the model penal code published by the American Law Institute. I directed them to the print model code, but I could tell the student realized this would not be a particularly wieldy resource for studying criminal law. As such, we talked a bit about her goals and I was able to show her some of our criminal law handbooks and outlines. Ultimately, this felt like a very successful reference desk interaction where I was able to effectively assist a student. As someone who would like to be a reference librarian, I am glad one of my first interactions in this capacity worked out well.
A larger task I worked on today was penning a few blog posts for the library's blog. The Dee J. Kelly Law Library's blog often highlights new resources, displays, or policies. My first blog post covered new white noise machines that had been placed in each study room. Recently, there have been complaints of noise in the library. As such, I put together a small post highlighting this new amenity intended to help students focus. My second blog post was a feature on US Law Week, a Bloomberg publication that covers Supreme Court news. As the Supreme Court has been frequently in the news of late, my site supervisor felt it would be a good idea to highlight this resource for any students that wished to stay informed regarding the Court's decisions and read any related analysis.
Photo Description: A photo of one of the white noise machines in our study rooms. I took this photo myself and used it in the blog post I penned regarding the machines.
