Today, I began discussing projects for this practicum with my site supervisor, Lisa Goodman. The projects I will be tackling during my practicum appear to be relatively varied and should allow me work closely with several librarians in the Dee J. Kelly Law Library. For one project, I will be drafting research guides on LGBTQ+ legal resources at A&M. For a second project, I will be assisting in collecting materials for a law professor's scholarship. And, finally, I will be researching grant opportunities for a book concerning Texas water rights. The last project has the shortest timeline, so I will be prioritizing that research. Indeed, I spent time today completing some preliminary research on grants, as well as looking into example research guides.
Today, I also shadowed a lecture on advanced legal research skills. This class is taught by Cynthia Buress, an instructional associate professor of law and reference librarian at A&M law school. However, for today, the lecture was given by Kristen Rowlette, who shares the same title. This was great experience because, from an academic perspective, I gained some new knowledge on legal research techniques. Most importantly, however, I was also able to observe first-hand a reference librarian in an instructional role. As someone who also hopes to one day incorporate teaching into my role as a law librarian, this was fantastic experience. I can imagine that I will one day be creating similar lesson plans and lecture materials.
Photo Description: This is the classroom where legal research skills are mostly taught in the Dee J. Kelly Law Library. Accordingly, this is where I was able to watch Professor Rowlette's lecture alongside her students. The classroom is roomy with lots of technical capabilities. It is also situation within the library on the lower level.
