Today was my first day with the Dee J. Kelly Law Library, which went wonderfully. I mostly spent the day getting oriented and meeting the library staff with whom I will be working. My orientation was led by Kristen Rowlette, an instructional associate professor of law and reference librarian. My practicum will especially emphasize reference work, so I imagine I will be learning a great deal from Kristen. Additionally, Kristen teaches legal research skills as a professor. Since this is a role I also want to eventually perform professionally, I am excited to learn from Kristen. Ultimately, I expect to work closely with Kristen on my assignments.
After meeting the library staff and touring the library, I was shown around the wider A&M law school. I was also introduced to more professors and university staff. This was ultimately a very thorough tour of the entire law school and its amenities. A few logistical items, such as ensuring my email worked, were addressed. Finally, we discussed potential projects for this program, including possibly drafting research guides and assisting with legal research courses. However, these discussions were largely preliminary and not necessarily firm. Tomorrow, I will begin substantive work and perhaps shadow the reference desk.
Photo Description: The A&M Law School, where I will be completing my practicum, as viewed from my parking spot. This is an urban campus and there is a lot of construction around. However, the interior of the building is beautiful and seems to be a thriving law school.
